EFA Doctoral Workshop

Alongside the EFA Annual Meeting, a one-day EFA Doctoral Workshop (EFA-DW) is organized for PhD students in their second or third year. EFA recently launched an educational workshop series on New Frontiers in Finance – featuring a different theme topic each year. The EFA-DW is held in parallel with the EFA Doctoral Tutorial (EFA-DT) on the same day the EFA Annual Meeting officially starts, preceded the evening before by a networking welcome dinner. During the EFA-DW, research on the selected Finance topic(s) is summarized in lecture presentations by leading professionals, and potential directions for future research are discussed. The aim is to explore lesser-known areas of Finance and provide a solid background for PhD students interested in pursuing research in these fields.

Program & Call

The 2020 EFA Doctoral Workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, August 19, 2020. This one-day workshop will study the new FinTech area of digital currency and blockchains, which has become one of the fastest growing research areas in Finance. We will examine research into the architecture of distributed ledgers, decentralized consensus protocols, and smart contracts, as well as the governance issues connected to them. Uses of cryptocurrency in payments, entrepreneurial finance (ICOs), remittances, and capital market clearing and settlement will be explored. Additional sessions will consider research into the performance of digital assets as investments and the emergence of stablecoins as potential rivals to sovereign fiat currencies, among other topics. This EFA-DW will highlight the most important research published to date on these topics and look closely at emerging regulation and FinTech data sources. The 2020 EFA Doctoral Workshop takes place at Helsinki Congress Centre Paasitorni, in Helsinki, Finland, preceding the opening of the 47th EFA Annual Meeting.
